I set up this blog to help people with the inevitable, everyday issues that pop up on Sony gaming consoles.
I am an absolutely passionate PlayStation 3 gamer. This blog will be updated on a semi-weekly basis with different "
errors" that arise on Sony's newest gaming console.
I'm encouraging those of you who have an expired warranty, to fix your own gaming console in the comfort of your own home. The alternative would be paying Sony to fix the errors, and manufacturing flaws in your PS3. Errors that they have been well aware of, long before the release date of the
first model.

Many users have fallen victim to the infamous red, and yellow lights of death that PS3 gaming systems are known for. Four months ago, I became the most recent addition to this all too famous family. I did what most people who have common sense would do: Unplug console, and then plug the unit back in. Unfortunately, this did not solve our problem.
I said to myself: "Well, that's it. I'm done. No more GT4, or UFC Undisputed for me." After moping around the house all day, cleaning up the mess that had developed from days of gaming...I felt the "yellow light of death"(YLOD), seemed to have defeated me.
After searching the net for hours, I decided to call Sony, even though my system was past the warranty period. I waited ten minutes on hold, then a very pleasant, yet hard to understand voice told me to view the trouble shooting guide at:
PlayStation SupportThe voice also informed me that phone support was only available to "registered" models, that were under warranty. I was encouraged to send the PlayStation to their center for a small fee of $300, to appease their out of warranty service team. In addition, I could expect to wait a
minimum of six weeks to have a simple light error fixed!

Needless to say, I decided to take matters into my own hands, as Sony made it clear they would wipe my hard drive clean during their repair process. I said: NO WAY! See, I love my my games, but....I'm a cheap old boy, and if I can fix it myself, I will. I knew I could buy a new system for the
ridiculous price these fools wanted me to pay them for repairs.
I decided I was going to find a fix of my own, that wouldn't cause me to lose my hard drive data. I was, at this point COMMITTED.
Following are a few methods that I found and tried, that will in many cases
FIX your console:
1) As with most technological mishaps; unplug your system for 60 seconds to an hour, then plug back in (if the system starts working again, your good to go. YAY!).
2) Unplug power, remove hard drive, plug system in (this resets the system to factory) - unplug system, reinstall hard drive - plug PS3 in and cross fingers (if the system starts working again you get to game another day!).
3) Go to any gaming site on the net, and try to download some "torrent" files from an unknown, possibly malicious source and hope the torrent repairs what is broken (I don't download from unknown sources, or open source networks).
After trying those three popular remedies, my friend Devin sent me a link on MSN messenger:
PS3Guide, He told me this is what most guys are using to fix their systems. Its a combination of hardware, and software fixes that anyone can use to fix their system in less than an hour. It also shows you how to easily install a
Linux operating system on your PS3.
My issue ended up being hardware related, and Devin's link fixed me up in one hour. All I needed was my
guide, a star screwdriver, regular toothpaste (it will make sense, don't worry!), and an internet connection, to download the files they sent me. Their download server is 100% secure (Its a Linux server). Rob Sheffield's crew is stand up. It was a no fuss, no muss process (far from the help offered by the manufacturer).
I feel when I find something affordable, that actually fixes my problem, its worth throwing it out there to the public. As I mentioned: I hate downloading torrent files from strange sources, and this PS3 fix is a great be all, end all product that is in short supply at the moment.
Just yesterday, PlayStation 3 owners were hit with a new error: "800105OF". This error is a result of buggy firmware on the FAT - original version - PS3. The firmware(brain) inside the unit needs to be updated and Sony will not issue a fix. Look out for this error, as there lots of untrustworthy types offering "quick fixes", and once again, many are torrent files that I simply
do not trust. Give the
kit a shot, and email me if you need any further advice.
Regards and good luck,
